Coach's Eye looks interesting. For starters, it's only $0.99, which is doable. This app for your iPhone works with the built in camera to record video of the player. It then also allows for scrubbing through the recorded video and add audio comments (voice narration) as well as telestration. I'm going to give it a try. I'll let you know what I find out.

I often get excited about a lot of things, especially as it relates to technology. I think, in this case, what I'm about to tell you is a game changer. I know, I know...these days there are many "game changers" but for teachers and students, it just got better.

This week iOS 5 came out. What's iOS 5? The latest update for your Apple devices like the iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone. The update has many features worth checking out, but one of the biggest and maybe least spoken or tweeted about is how Apple TV now works with all of those devices.

Apple TV is a $99.00 little box that will need to be hooked up to a flat screen OR projector (with HDMI). The key here is the HDMI. So in my picture, I have the Apple TV device plugged into the flat screen (via HDMI).

Alright. Are you with me so far? The Apple TV is on the same wireless network as my iPad. I now have the ability to completely mirror my iPad to the flat screen using AirPlay.

So? Well now the teacher isn't tethered to his/her desk. The teacher can walk around the room carrying the device, manipulating apps, handing the iPad to a student, making it interactive...just like an interactive white board would, all the while every student can see what's happening.

Oh, but wait. There's more.

What if each student in the classroom has a device? Then the teacher asks a question, the students search for the answer and then share it but sending it through the Apple TV...projecting their answer for all to see?! Any device that's running iOS 5 can be mirrored.

I tell you what...this iOS 5 update paired with Apple TV makes these devices even better.

Waiting for iOS 5 & Reflecting on Steve Jobs

I am in my office today, working on a presentation...and waiting. Waiting for iOS 5. I haven't written much, other than a tweet or Facebook post, about the death of Steve Jobs. But as I check for the new update to my iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch) I can't help but think about his, and Apple's, effect on our daily lives.

I'm looking at my desk, writing this blog entry on my iMac. My iPad sits, anxiously awaiting the update, plugged into the MacBook Pro (iPhone close by).

I can't help but wonder what device will be on my desk in 2020? Who knows what I'll have in 2012?! Shoot, a couple of years ago we didn't even have the iPad. It didn't exist.

Technology, in general, has changed and will continue to change how we learn. I'm excited to be hear...now. I can't help but think and wonder what he, Steve Jobs, would have guided Apple into creating...with another 30 years. Nonetheless, he is gone. Time will tell.

iPad Apps: What's New (for me)

I am continually amazed at how much I love my iPad. Almost every day I find a new use, app, or have some fantastic experience.

First, let me tell you about Zite. This app is by far (right now), my favorite. It's incredible because it's a magazine, that gets smarter the more it's used. After reading an article on whatever the topic, I can choose to "Give me more from..." and then voila, the magazine pulls other articles into my magazine. It's genius. If I choose to share it, built into the app are links to Evernote, Twitter, Facebook, Instapaper, LinkedIn, Delicious, Read it Later, and email. I have categories like: Gadgets, Mac News, Photography, Social Media, College Football, Education, Google and more. It's worth checking out. Oh, did I tell you the cost? It's FREE!

If you have attended a webinar on your desktop or laptop, it's time to download this FREE app as well. It's called Adobe Connect Mobile for iOS. I experienced using this app today and it was smooth, responsive and worked quite well. I could type in the chat room, listen to the conversation and I was even able to speak, when the host gave me microphone rights. I don't know what else it can do, but I loved it. Like I said in my opening line, each day I experience something new...

Here's an app that will allow me to connect to my computer and control it. It's called Splashtop. So basically, whatever is on my computer, I see on my iPad. I can then use my iPad to control my computer. It's just like a mouse. Think of this...I can use an interactive whiteboard application (on my computer) and walk around the room, holding my iPad, because I'm connected. So I find myself at the back of the room and I don't want to walk up to the front because I'm standing by the student at the back (who needs to be stood by because of behavior or he/she just needs help)...I can still pick my pen, highlighter or whatever and manipulate that whiteboard. I believe this one had a $4.99 price tag. But I think it's only on sale (maybe $19.99 regularly). It works on Macs or PCs. I also had to download a little application on my computer that allows the iPad to connect. It wasn't bad setting up, so don't let that scare you.

I am a fan of NPR and I think they have a great app. I can not only read articles, but listen to the audio (on some)...but not all. There's a button on the bottom of the app, "Hourly News" where I can just tap and listen. There's a Directory where I can search by title or topic. The cost....FREE!

So get that iPad into your hands, search for new apps and enjoy what you find!

It's Not You, It's Me.

Dear Blog,

Life gets busy...and for some reason, the blog sat........unattended, lonely and not updated. So I should start with an apology to my blog. I'm sorry I've ignored you. It wasn't something I'd planned. It just happened. It's not you, it's me. I have no excuse...or do I?

What did I do since, well, last May or June? Well, work of course. But I'm guessing that either camping, home work projects, fishing, laundry, golfing (occasionally), boating, laundry, attending a conference or two, presenting here or there, laundry...time flew.

I don't expect it to necessarily get any slower, but maybe the great weather outside got in the way? Who knows? I do know that I've missed it.

I am currently thinking about my goals for this year and I'm excited to be where I'm at and to be doing what I'm doing.

Whitewater, Changes and Education

Last week at an administrative retreat, I had the opportunity to listen to Dr. Neal Schnoor, Dean of Education at Wayne State College. One thing he had mentioned during his talk was that of change. How education is filled with change, not slow change, but a "whitewater of change" to which I had a visual. Yesterday I went to Yankton, South Dakota, Gavin's Point Dam, to look at the massive amounts of water that are being let through and flooding many areas below. I couldn't help but think of his speech and the changes that we (educators) face.

I can't tell you how much I enjoy the NETA conference each year. I have been going for a long, long time.

I remember when I was a young teacher and got to go for my first time. I didn't really know what it was, but I went and was hooked. This was like 1992 or something like that, I don't recall for sure...but when I returned to school I asked my principal if I could go again the next year and he quickly said "no." I understood why, because everybody wanted to go. I didn't like it but I understood.

Well, safe to say I haven't missed (I don't think) since that next year when I couldn't go.

So this drawing represents what NETA is for me...friends and learning. I can't wait.

Thoughts About iPad 2

I watched the news come out today about the iPad 2. So, to jump right to it, here's what I took from it that's most meaningful for educators.

1. Two cameras: This means creativity. Students will be able to take this device and create, edit and share a movie. To add, virtual field trips or video conferencing are much easier now. GarageBand will also be available...to expand on the creativity.

2. AirPlay and Video Mirroring: With video mirroring, whatever the teacher does, the students will be able to see...it's a VGA adapter so it will be plugged in. So if the teacher is demonstrating an application, the students see what's happening. Now if it's wireless that your after, AirPlay allows for wireless sharing of video, music, etc. with an HDTV. So students could create and then send / share their project to the TV without plugging into anything. I am unsure if AirPlay will allow apps to be shared / shown or not. We'll see.

3. The reports say that it's up to 9x faster, 33% thinner and 15 % lighter as well. So that's good. Many of us wouldn't mind being 9x faster, 33% thinner and 15% lighter.

I can't wait to see how the iPad 2 changes the teaching and learning process.

I can't wait...well, I'll have to until March 11th. Now that's when we can order. But when do they ship? April? May? June? I want to know!

Blog. Give Yourself A Voice & Connect With The World

I think that the process of blogging should have some role in the school setting. Writing is obviously important in schools. They teach it, practice it and in Nebraska, have a State Writing Assessment! When a person blogs, the audience goes from two people (the writer and the teacher), to many people (the writer and the audience).

Let's face it, students want to use technology while at school. They would most likely be on the computer typing (blogging) rather than writing on a piece of paper and handing it in with the hopes of seeing a comment in a few days...from the teacher. Blogging has the ability to achieve comments from multiple sources. For instance, a class might have a blog that is protected, in other words only certain people can see it (like only the teacher and those in the classroom). By creating this scenario, now the student's writing can be read and commented on by those students in the classroom. Not to forget that the blog post can be read by and commented on by multiple people all at once.

Another scenario might be that the blog is out in cyber space for all to see. Now think if the student writes about a topic, say, volcanoes. The blog post happens to catch the eye of a scientist who lives at the foot of a volcano. Can you imagine the dialogue, the learning that might take place when the scientist comments on that student's blog? Of course I realize that this won't happen all of the time. I mean, c'mon, my students won't post something and get responses from around the world instantly.

But it could.

This is why the teacher needs to know about blogging...about social networking...about global communication. The teacher needs to have a network of teachers, a working knowledge of how they might go about finding that scientist who works at the base of the volcano. If the teacher doesn't use the technology, how will they be able to encourage and assist the students?

I believe that if done correctly, a system of writing, editing, posting, reading, commenting, (repeat the cycle), could be very powerful. VERY powerful.

So, begin to explore the world of blogging, social networks, Twitter, wikis, shared Google documents and the like.

It's never too late to start.

Backup Your Stuff...Seriously

I've been down this road. I turn on my computer...wait. I turn on my computer...what? I turn on my computer... Wait.... This scene happened over 10 years ago. It wasn't a great feeling. I did lose some stuff on my computer. It wasn't fun. I was a new principal and I hadn't been doing much backing up. Now much of my "stuff" on my computer was gone.

Let me tell you. It's not a good feeling.

Flash forward to 2011. I believe computers are much more stable. Places like Dropbox and Google Docs are available to upload, store and save your items. Did I mention those are free? You might also get a MobileMe account. However you'll have to pay for that one...but if you have an iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, it's very handy. There are many, many other places to store things online. Many, many places. If you don't want to save your items into cyberspace, buy a flash drive. They are relatively cheap to buy now. External hard drives are also being sold by the terabyte. Yes, 1TB is 1024GB. Actually a person can get one bigger. I'm saying it's not uncommon now to buy a 1TB or 2TB external hard drive.

Here's the deal. Storage is free and / or cheap. My "Mr. Obvious" suggestion for the day is to back up your stuff. Because the odds are that someday...yes, someday...your computer will "BURP" and your stuff will be gone. Trust me, it's not a good feeling.

I've been tweeting now for a couple of years and it truly is an interesting place to learn or share. I get plenty of good ideas, links to fantastic blogs, articles and videos from Twitter. It's my PLN (Professional Learning Network) or (Personal Learning Network).

There are many things that I consider important to remember about Twitter...here's a few that come to mind.

Follow the Right People: The key to a great PLN is to follow people on Twitter that help me in some way. For instance, if I'm an elementary teacher, I might follow other elementary teachers...and maybe not a lead singer for a rock band from Detroit. I also enjoy following someone with humor. I find it equally interesting seeing a tweet that has a punchline. Often it brings a smile to an otherwise dry period in the day. I mean, c'mon folks...I don't want to be serious all of the time.

Not a Time Waster: Think of Twitter not as a time waster...but as a time saver. It all boils down to who I follow. If I follow great people and organizations, they'll post items that will help me out. They'll post links to articles, videos and blogs that I might not have ever found.

We Don't Know It All: I definitely know people who believe that they know it all. Maybe they just quit learning...or maybe have failed to stay current and quit learning as soon as they got their degree from college. You know, "I have my degree. I now know it all." If I knew it all, I'd be on Jeopardy playing against Watson...the super computer. By the way, I don't know it all...(keep your comments to a minimum please).

Live Beyond Your Walls: Here's the deal. I (you, we) do NOT live in a world where the sum of our knowledge comes from our teacher(s), our peers where we work or natural god-given intellectual ability. There's a HUGE world out there and applications like Twitter allow quick access to great minds.

Cliques: I do see cliques that have formed on Twitter. When one person in a clique posts something, then their friends chime in, answer the question, retweet the post, etc. etc. In other words, they get the help that they need or ask for. While others don't. Of course there are factors that I (we) can't control. For instance, who's "on" Twitter when the post is made? In other words, if my followers aren't actually on Twitter at the time of the post, they may not be there to help. Sometimes it's like a slot machine. Sometimes you win...sometimes you don't. I defer to my first suggestion "Follow the Right People".

Just Be A Creeper: Not, that's not sick. Don't be a creep...be a creeper. What I mean is, if you are posting questions and aren't getting answers...just follow a bunch of great people and see what they post. In other words, just watch the Twitter stream. There's plenty to gain from watching.

I know that for some people, Twitter won't be their cup of tea...and that's ok. But as for Twitter, the bottom line is that it's an amazing place to learn, share and expand my personal knowledge.

Give it a try.

Technology Changes Quickly

I am never shocked or surprised when something changes with technology. Each year, month, day, hour and minute, something is changing with software or hardware. It is both frustrating and exciting all at the same time. It seems as though just about the time I get comfortable with a certain piece of technology, be it software or hardware, it changes. I often make instructional videos (how-to-videos) and I've posted them one night and the next day, the website or application has changed. What I made yesterday, doesn't work for today. I actually laughed when it happened...kind of. Well, it was funny, my great video I made for people was outdated one day later!

It's more about a way of thinking for the world we live in. We (the users of this software and hardware) have to get used to it. It changes...and it changes quickly. We have to roll with it. Sometimes the changes are simply to make it better. Sometimes I think that the company just changes it so that they can have you buy their updated stuff. If you don't buy their updated software or hardware, your computer quickly becomes outdated. It's genius really. Think of it this way...I make a piece of software that you absolutely love. I then occasionally update it, with some sweet advancements. I charge you for those updates. Then a year or so later. I come up with a whole new version of the software that looks different and better, but generally does the same thing. I sell it to you again. I make a bunch of money. I'd actually love to do this but I am, unfortunately not a programmer. But I digress...

I remember a few years ago I bought an iPod. I put music and pictures on it. I scrolled through the hundreds of pictures and listened to the music...that's it. But it was amazing. Now, we have internet on the iPod Touch and the iPad. We have apps for just about everything. We have various web based applications in which to save our stuff. We can shoot video, take pictures and instantly upload them to the web and share with the world.

Here's my point. To even attempt to stay current, up-to-date or on the "cutting edge", I have to continually work, learn, play, talk, watch, listen and look at how the software or hardware are being used. I work with and use technology every day and learn something new EVERY DAY. I (we) have to learn to adapt as the technology changes. If I don't, I'd either be walking around with a bag phone or a Palm Pilot . WE have to adapt. We have to use our previous knowledge of how something works and apply it to the new gadget...and sometimes we may even have to start over in our learning. That's what's FUN!

It's an exciting time to be alive...and I can't help but wonder what super cool gadget is on my desk or in my hands that I'm using now that 1 year or 2 years down the road, I'll laugh at and reminisce about the good ole' days. What about the kids in elementary school right now? What piece of technology will they be using? Do you suppose they'll still be using the same software and hardware when they are out of college? I doubt it.

iPads May Take Over Georgia

Technology Engages Kids...It really does.

Technology engages kids. I think I figured this out a long time ago when I was teaching 6th grade in Papillion-La Vista. I still a fairly new teacher and the internet was growing and growing. I think it was 1995 or 1996. I only had one computer in my room (as I recall)...and we signed up for a program called MayaQuest.

MayaQuest was pretty much the brain-child of Dan Buettner. What Dan and his group did...was to ride bikes through several places like the Yucatan Peninsula. They were trying to gain insight about the collapse of the Mayans. What made this great for myself, the young 6th grade teacher...was that these riders had a satellite dish and computers. They took pictures, answered questions from classes like mine and received input from thousands of schools.

What I'm getting at is this...this project engaged my students. We answered questions posed by the trekers. We looked at maps at where they were bicycling. We looked at where questions were coming from as they came across the computer...from around the globe. It was fascinating...engaging. It would have been very difficult for me to try and get that kind of engagement if we would have been satisfied reading the chapter out of the book on the Mayans. Lucky for me, we didn't.

Now that it's coming closer to the 20 year anniversary of the MayaQuest expedition, I can't help but think about how technology has changed. It's changed quite a bit.

But one thing hasn't changed, in my opinion. Students will most likely be more engaged when technology is used to enhance their learning. It's that simple.

Engage them.

Next time you find yourself shaking your fist at YouTube or thinking that you are glad your district blocks YouTube...think of what's great about it. If you don't know what's great about it, try searching "Yosemite Nature Notes". These are well done videos about what's happening at this great place. My son and I watched Episode 9 - Frazil Ice. It held his attention (and mine)...as we watched and listened.

We Don't Want To Wait.

Apple started their "App Store" for software downloads last month. I'm not talking about the apps you use for your iPod Touch, your iPad, etc. I'm talking about for your computer. It's sweet, let me tell you about it.

I'll quote from the Apple site: "No more boxes, no more disks, no more time-consuming installation. Click once to download and install any app on your Mac."

This is why I love it. I've been there, you probably have too. When an update to software comes out, I'd order it online, wait for days for it to come and it finally arrives. Then after installing it, decide where to put the discs...store them forever, then eventually, years later...throw them away.

Now, no waiting for the install discs. I can simply go to the App Store and download what I need. No waiting.

I'm curious if the new OS will work this way? It's supposed to come out this summer. I wonder if it will be too big?

I really see this sort of process how it probably should and will happen for all types of software...PC and Mac.

Oh yeah, what's even better...I can now get Angry Birds on my Mac. How bad can that be?!

To get the App Store on your Mac, you must be running at least 10.6 or higher. If you have an earlier version, time to upgrade. After upgrading, what you see in your dock, is an App Store icon. It's blue with and A in it.

Have you ever heard the term "digital immigrant" or "digital native"? If not, well...if you are above, let's say, 25 years old, you might be a digital immigrant. You weren't born with all of these awesome technological advancements. You were around maybe when the VCR came out...or when a computer at home meant you had an ATARI. Get the picture.

The digital natives are kids that have grown up with cable, DVRs, internet, cell phones, iPods, iPads, social networking, text messages, etc. They are NATIVES to this world. They don't know it any other way. These natives don't think about using it or "how to use it"...they just do. Where we (the digital immigrants) have had to learn a new language.

Here's an example of something my second grade daughter and fourth grade son did the other day. They are natives of course. I walked into our living room where I have an Apple TV hooked up to my television. So they were able to change the input on the regular television, browse through the Apple TV, find Netflix, browse to their show, read about the episode, then play it. I knew how to do this, so I had them explain what they did. They explained it in a very "matter of fact" tone...like, it was easy. What's the big deal? Then when they were done with that show, they browsed the Apple TV, found my computer, picked a movie that I'd purchased and had in my iTunes...and began to watch. Digital Natives.

Here's another example: I was teaching some students and teachers how to use their iPod Touch, shoot and edit video, then upload it. I (the digital immigrant) was whining about the only two choices I have to export (wirelessly)...or at least I thought. Those choices were: Email or Send to YouTube. I broke into my story about how I wish I could post this video to FaceBook. How annoyed I was that I couldn't do this. About this time a digital native (student) said, "You can post it FaceBook." She quickly said, do this, this and this. Voila. She was right! I was very excited.

I work with technology every day...IT'S MY JOB. But on my passport or birth certificate it must say "Digital Immigrant"??? Right?!

The moral of the story. If you're really stuck, had your device to a "Native"...and have them show you how to do it! But don't give up! Keep trying.

Coffee Talk...the Language is Changing

I love to notice the language in certain conversations regarding technology. I sometimes chuckle at the words used these days as we sit and talk...wiki, embed code, PLN, enabling cookies, javascript, blog, 'googling' something, etc. etc. I wonder what words will be invented in the next 10 years? 8th Grader Makes #1 FREE App for Apple

Robert Nay, a Utah 8th grade student...with some help from his mom, now has the #1 FREE app in Apple's App Store. He has developed a physics game that is pretty straight forward in that, the goal is to get the ball to the flag. Each level becomes increasingly more difficult. Nice job Robert! Not bad for 14! Not bad for any age!

I had a problem...and I fixed it.

Here was the problem. I had the picture in my blog...the header picture, and it was left justified. It was on the LEFT. I wanted it in the CENTER! Annoying. I remember several months ago when I uploaded it. I didn't have a choice as to where to have it placed. It just went there. AAARRGGHH!

So I ignored it.

I thought I'd get used to it. But I didn't. So today, finally. I "Googled" it...and found my answer.

The answer...was really geeky and techy. But it was the answer. I followed the directions and what do you know? It worked.

The instructions were to: Edit the HTML...find a certain spot, insert this specific code...and voila!

What I had to do. I had to find this specific part in the code...and then Copy > Paste the code into my blog to make it work.

To Wait...or NOT To Wait?

If you've ever looked at technology...in any form, be it software, hardware, phone or whatever the case...and think, "Maybe I'll wait for the next version to come out before I'll buy it." I'd recommend going for it. Here's why.

Technology seemingly changes every minute. It's no doubt changing as I type this blog entry. Think of it like this. The iPad came out last April, 2010. In the last year millions have been sold. So many have been sold because it's such a friendly and useful tool. But this entry isn't about the iPad, it's about what I wouldn't have learned if I decided to "wait" for the next iPad to come out.

If I'd waited, I would know how the apps are changing the way we work, live and learn. Sure I could read about it in a blog or in the paper, but why not change myself. Shouldn't I, an educator, instructional technologist and parent begin to understand where technology is headed?

As a parent, I feel it's important to understand the world that my children are growing up in. What's funny is that the iPad will seem like a dinosaur when my youngest gets into college...or gets to be my age. I have no doubt she'll say, "Remember when we thought the iPad was cool?" We'll all laugh as we continue using whatever is in our hands at that moment.

I think about how when as young newlyweds, we were discussing starting a family. We thought we'd maybe wait until we "had money" and how our older more experienced couples said if you wait until you have money, you'll never have children. I see technology similarly. If you always want to "wait for the next version...the next iPad..." you'll only be farther behind!

It's exciting to learn new things. It's fun to try out the latest and greatest. In my case, I love to see it, use it, find out how it would work in the classroom for teachers, students and administrators. That's why I love my job. I get to do that. It's what makes my job interesting. I know I'll never know it all and I also know that it's forever changing...

...and it's changing as we speak.

I've heard and read the argument that the iPad doesn't do anything different than what laptop already does. I'd have to disagree. The iPad is changing classrooms...when used correctly. With the right app, we save paper. With the right app students can be more engaged because that app might make learning more fun. I'm also hear to tell you that when I only use my fingers to use an app, it's quite interesting. No doubt my brain is growing as I do so.

So if you're thinking about waiting...on whatever the device is, or if it's software, kids, taking a class, skydiving...whatever. Don't. Just do it. Life's short. Have some fun.

It seems to me that Google Docs keeps getting better and better. I say this because now I have the ability to upload VIDEO to Google Docs! In November we were allowed to EDIT Google Docs on our iPad, iPod and Smart Phones...and now this!

Here's a link to some information on playing video in Docs...with information on types of video you can upload, etc.

The more I use Google Docs, the more I love it. It's hard not to...and the cost is right! FREE!

A Techy Christmas...and a Happy New Year!

So how was your holiday break? Great I hope! Did Santa visit your house? If so, what did he bring you? Any new "tech stuff" to play with or just puppies and pajamas? Well, let me tell you about mine.

Apple TV...I'm loving it. It's been around for awhile, but I was hesitant at first...but now that it's in round 2 and it's smaller, sleeker, and less expensive, I went for it. I think it was $99.00. Yes, I bought it for myself and told my wife that she bought it for me for Christmas.

So here's what it is. It's a little box, you can hold it in the palm of your hand. This little box can connect, wirelessly, to your computer. I do have wireless in my house so you'll have to connect to your own wireless network. Once you plug the Apple TV (box) into your tv, assuming you have a newer tv with and HDMI port...whatever movies, music, and pictures you have on your computer, you can now watch on your tv! (I use iTunes for downloading music and movies.)

Here's an example: I have downloaded Toy Story 3 on my computer, through iTunes. So it's sitting on my computer, in iTunes. Now with Apple TV, I can go upstairs to the tv with the Apple TV (box) plugged into the back and watch the movie on the large screen!

But wait, there's more!

Over the Christmas break, we also looked at the many pictures on my computer while sitting in the comfort of my living room. The old way might have been standing or sitting around my small crowded home office...(not as fun). So these "slideshows" we can now watch on our big screen can be manipulated to play music (from my Mac), change transitions, etc. etc. Awesome! While sitting and watching last year's pictures, I did realize that I need to clean up my pictures. I many blurry and poor pics. That's the beauty of digital cameras. I can take hundreds of pictures and it doesn't cost me any more...but I do need to delete that poor ones.

But wait...there's even more!

I can also rent tv shows and movies!

But wait...there's EVEN MORE!

I can use this Apple TV to connect to NETFLIX and YouTube!

OK...I'll try and calm down, but it's difficult.

Educational Value:

Here's a PRICELESS educational spin for Apple TV. It's called AirPlay. Imagine this. A student has an iPod Touch in their hands...the latest version, the iPod with two cameras. The student has an assignment to explain, to the class, how to solve a math problem. The student uses the iPod Touch to record him or herself solving the problem and explaining their thought process as they solve it. Then quickly edit the movie, on the iPod Touch, then by using AirPlay, send it the tv right in the classroom. All without connecting a cord, without burning a cd or emailing it. The students and teacher watch the video in amazement. They cheer when it's completed. The student creator is proud and engaged! Wow.

How would that differ that the typical..."Take out your books, do problems 1-45 and turn it in." Then, a few days later, the teacher finally hands it back to you. No cheering. No clapping for your grade (like they would have clapped after your video).

I think this Apple TV has a TON of educational potential. Sure, I love it for home...that's beside the point. I use it at home but in the classroom, if I were still teaching, this would be a dream!

A Conversation with Eric Crouch - Part 2

So earlier, I told you about my conversation with Eric Crouch about the iPad. Now I'd like to share some other thoughts about what I found interesting as well.

Somewhere in our discussion, Eric asked about whether or not the iPad would be good for his children to use in a variety of ways. Specifically, he said he'd like to have the kids be able to see a shared calendar and know, for instance, that practice was after school...or whatever. So I mentioned, iCal, and Google Calendar and said that was possible.

At some point he noticed the Netflix icon and asked, "What's Netflix?" I told him. I was chuckling to myself because as I was explaining it, I thought I sounded like I worked for them. I had a similar feeling as I was "selling" the iPad!

I also asked about the XM / Sirius radio show. He said he does almost all of it from his house. They (XM / Sirius) set him up with, what he described, was a little box...and a microphone. He is able to "do the show" from his house. He said it sounds great, "...just like being in a studio...". I thought to myself, I'd like to see this setup. I am constantly amazed at "technology" and what we can do...without "being in a studio" or having to travel.

I asked him if he travels much for the satellite radio job. He said no, only a couple of times. One of which is how I bumped into him. He was coming home from the SEC Championship game, where he'd been the night before.

Well? So what? I guess I loved hearing about the satellite radio show. I thought it sounded really glamorous. To have a radio show with Eddie George. I pictured them in a fancy studio, earphones on, talking football at some really shiny monster desk (I had an ESPN studio in my head). But in fact, almost all of it is done in his house...only traveling on occasion.

Technology amazes me.

Since I mentioned he liked the Madden 11 game on my iPad. I do remember that he plays "Playstation" with his son...football no doubt.

I wonder who wins?

Again, thanks Eric Crouch...for humoring a dad by playing along with the "Flat Allie"...humoring a Husker fan....and humoring a tech fan by allowing me to be a geek and tell you about all that's cool with the iPad, Netflix...and tech stuff in general.

By having this time with...well, a celebrity. Now who? Who's next on the interview list?

Do I need to hang out in airports waiting for the odd chance to get a seat next to a celebrity or should I just move on with my life?

Better move on... Sigh.

I Love the New iPod Touch...oh yah, and FLAT STANLEY (ALLIE)

I love the new iPod Touch. There, I said it. I'm not afraid!

As you may recall, after receiving the new iPod Touch I fired my Flip video camera.

Well, I had the chance to use it to help out a classroom that my daughter is in. They are doing the ever-popular Flat Stanley project. If you aren't familiar with Flat Stanley, he's shipped around the world and it's a lot of fun. My daughter's class are using themselves for the project. So "Flat Allie" made the trip with me to a conference I was presenting at in Savannah, GA.

I used the iPod Touch to record some of the various places I visited. Next I used the iMovie app to edit and share the video.

I couldn't get over how easy it was to record, edit, and share...using this tiny device. I think about what the process used to be: Drag around a camera, battery might be charged...and it might not, find a tape, upon filming I had to get the chord, upload it to my computer, edit on the computer...then share.

NOW I do all of this with ONE TINY DEVICE. Not to mention I have access to my email, photos, apps, music, internet (in a wireless environment).

My mind goes to the classroom. How easy it would be for students to record and share their learning...if they have access to these devices.

The last video is Flat Allie with Eric Crouch, former Nebraska Heisman Trophy winner. He was really a great sport to participate. He understood...he said his daughter did this too.

Impromptu Conversation with Eric Crouch

I happened to be on a plane coming home from Georgia last weekend and was fortunate enough to be seated next to Eric Crouch, former Husker quarterback standout and Heisman Trophy winner in 2001. So, as the plane takes off and reaches the height where the pilot tells us that we can turn on our electronics again, I take out my iPad and continue reading my book.

After awhile Eric asked if I liked the iPad. I said of course, "Yah. I really do." I ask, "Have you ever messed with one?" Eric says, "No." I think to myself, ever-so-briefly, "Gee, should I talk to him about this?" I did.

I showed him several of the educational games that I think are fun. Since I was reading a book, I demonstrated how you can highlight sections in iBooks, define words using the built in dictionary, etc. Next, I showed him the pictures, how I can watch videos, like "A Charlie Brown Christmas" (which I was watching in the airport terminal). I had to do something during the 6 hours I sat waiting for the plane!

Anyway, back to the iPad. I continued to show him the new features like the fast-app-swiching and now wanted him to try a game. I handed him my iPad. He took it cautiously and sat it down on the tray in front of him.

I thought about having him try "Flight Control HD". It's a game where the player pretends to be an air traffic controller. Of course the main job is to get the planes on the ground safely. Well, of course the game ends when the airport gets busy and the planes crash. I didn't really want him or myself to play a "Plane Crashing" game in the air...so I thought maybe that wasn't the right choice.

I decided on "Cut the Rope". It's really a fun game where the goal is to get the candy into Nom (the creature). To do so, the player has to cut ropes, use balloons, pulleys, etc. So it's a thinking game with each level getting more difficult. He guardedly cut the rope and it fell into the mouth of the creature. He tried a few levels and we discussed how kids really thrive on games like this. I shared how my kids absolutely love this game and finished all of the levels.

Next I showed him "Madden NFL HD". Now I have not played this game at all. I've seen my kids play it, so wasn't much help other than to show him where I see my boys put their thumbs. to control it. I noticed the team he wanted to be. He picked the Green Bay Packers. I said, "You like the Pack?" He said, "Yep."

Here's what's funny. I was telling him how I see my boys playing this game. As I'm doing this I'm thinking to myself...(I'm telling Eric Crouch how to play a football game!) I say this is funny because, ME...telling ERIC CROUCH, a Heisman Trophy winner, football analyst for Versus, XM and Sirius radio...how to play a football game. That would be like giving advice to Warren Buffet about money right? So I closed my mouth.

It was interesting next as he was telling me what he was looking at and why he picked a certain play. I was thinking this was pretty cool.

I think at some point we stopped because the snacks came around. Little tiny bags of pretzels (I ate his)...and he ordered the "Snack Box" or whatever they call them. He opened the tuna, or whatever it was, took a bite, said it was not good and that he couldn't eat anymore of that. Put it back in the box.

I've got to say he was a very down-to-earth, friendly, and cordial person. Not that I expected him not to be....I'm just stating his demeanor and that people like myself probably love talking to him. I wouldn't blame him if would have liked to just sit quietly on the plane.

I want to share more of our conversation in my next blog entry. We talked about whether or not the iPad would be something for his kids, his need for a shared calendar for his family, and his XM / Sirius radio show, my job, his job...and more.

I'm glad to hear that the iPad update is coming out today. That's good because I'm ready to put apps into folders. Many teachers ask me if the iPad can print? How will I print? Personally, I haven't had the need to print, or if I did need to I simply emailed it to myself, then printed. But in this update, there's a solution to printing. I think I'll really enjoy the "fast app switcher" found by double-tapping the home button.

Neligh - Pre Flood

Last May...late May, I needed some video for an iMovie class. So I took my Flip video camera and drove around Neligh to get some footage. Little did I know that in a few short weeks, the very bridge I drove across and the swinging bridge I walked over...would be gone.

So I stumbled on this video footage and then used iMovie '11, part of iLife '11, which just came out.

In this version of iMovie, the user has a choice to create a "movie trailer"...which is what I've done here.

I came across this via Twitter this morning and thought I'd share it. The site is, The First Thanksgiving. As I glance at the page, the first thing that jumps out at me is the Virtual Field Trip - Nov. 16th! I believe that it's FREE! Here's the "Frequently Asked Questions" from the site.

I watched a few of the videos on the site and they are well done, quality videos. I really think that your students might enjoy learning about what life was like around this time period. What I really love, is that with each click on the page, I get to learn about something new. I found myself reading about one aspect and then found myself digging deeper and learning about something completely different! For instance I can tour the Mayflower, learn about daily life, download teacher resources, free printables, a vocabulary list, and even make a Mini Mayflower!

Don't bother Googling "Thanksgiving" this year...just spend some time on this site!

If you haven't tried to use Google Docs I think it's time. Then once you are signed up, create a new form. By creating this form, you are asking for information. This information is entered and then automatically goes into a spreadsheet! It can't get any easier.

This quick video is a student talking about how they are going to use it to make life easier.

Skyfire App will bring Flash video to iPhone / iPad

I find this very interesting. If you are an iPod Touch / iPad / iPhone user, you already know that Flash video is an issue. I'll say it's an issue...we can't view ANY Flash video.

Well, this app promises to solve that issue: Skyfire

Actually, I think it's a "browser"...like Safari. So Flash hasn't been allowed, this browser apparently changes or translates the video so that we, the user, can view it.

Oh...it's not available until Thursday! (It's only Tuesday today...don't worry, I already looked in the iTunes Store...it's not there).

I will probably pay the $2.99 to get the app / browser. Who am I kidding, did I say "probably"??? Of course I will.

Living Digitally - I sit in awe of it...

There are days when I just sit in awe of "technology". Yesterday was one of those days.

I use technology all day long, but yesterday afternoon I kind of chuckled at how easy and useful it is to me in my daily life. Take my afternoon for example. I had a planned iChat meeting with a couple of educators from a local district. We were all three at different locations, using the video portion of iChat to discuss the topic-at-hand.

In the not-so-recent past, I would have probably driven to the school (35 minutes or so) to meet. Then the return trip back to home or work (another 35 minutes), 70+ miles, gas, time spent driving, probably would have stopped and had a snack Sonic...probably a smoothie...mmm, Sonic. [Pause for dramatic effect] I would have ordered a Banana-Strawberry smoothie....

...But I digress. Back to the topic of living digitally.

Through tools like iChat for the Mac, Google Talk, Skype, FaceTime, etc. etc. Time and money can be saved!

Where was I? Oh yes, my video chat. We share, we work, we plan...via video chatting. So just about as our discussion ends, I have another person, from another district altogether, contact me via iChat. this person has a quick "tech question". I answer it and I move to my next task. Parent-Teacher conferences!

Well since I'm at work, I can't make it to parent-teacher conferences in person so I video chat with the teacher and my wife. It's as good as being there! They held up my son's scores, we discussed his progress. I also conferenced with my daughter's teacher in this fashion as well. I must admit, it was pretty slick.

So?!

I've used video chatting for years now it seems. I guess it just struck me yesterday again that...wow, this is awesome.

I flash forward to today as I'm working...

I'm using my Mac server to upload and share video.
On the same Mac server, I'm using a wiki and blog to plan an event with a school
Posting video to YouTube
Uploading items to iTunes U
Blogging
Asking advice of others on Twitter
Using Skype to both text chat and video chat.
Emailing a school to schedule a time to visit

Get the picture?!

What did we do prior to this? What did we do?

I have to go now. I have another video chat with a tech person and a handful of students to plan an event...Need I mention I'm not traveling to do it?

Immediately after that I will train staff at my workplace to create a PDF portfolio...but in my presentation, I'll direct them to the previously made videos to help learn the task-at-hand.

So...I'm going to sit right here in my nice cozy office and get it all done.

All I need is a fireplace and maybe some slippers. I'll settle for a space heater and my jacket.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. When I'm done with this post...I'll share it on Twitter and then Facebook.

Going Digitial

What does it mean to "go digital"? What does it mean for schools? Kids? Teachers? Personally? Professionally?

My thoughts go to YouTube, Facebook, and creating digital content. As I look at apps like iPhoto, Screenflow, and others, they include (in them) an option to "upload to Facebook" or "send to YouTube". It's becoming easier by the moment.

My mind also goes to the world of Creative Commons. Should we share what we make and make it available for all? I think that if we create digital content, it should in fact be shared...not hidden. What do you think?

Have you been to iTunes U? This is a great example of the sharing that should be taking place by all of us!

iPhoto:

New full screen modes - I like this feature. Full screen when working with pictures is sweet.
Facebook enhancements - see comments from Facebook...from within iPhoto.
Emailing photos - many new cool templates to make emailing photos an art form.
New slideshows - several new slideshow options allow the user to create incredible slideshows that look like a professional built them for you.
Big leap in books - completely customize a book.

iMovie:

All new audio editing - the ability to edit audio, from within iMovie. Nice. It includes special effects.

Have you ever made a portfolio? As a teacher, maybe you collected papers all year long. You took the papers you wanted and put them in a folder. The papers were able to show growth, projects completed, etc. etc. I bet these were mostly papers and drawings. The "old" portfolio probably didn't have a movie created by the student tucked neatly in-between the other pages. How about an audio recording?

Well, Adobe Acrobat Pro (version 9.4) has an awesome and easy feature allowing the user to create a PDF Portfolio. Basically, it organized it for you and to get it into the portfolio, it's a "click and drag". Awesome.

Reflections on Scott McLeod's Message

Scott McLeod keynoted at the 2nd annual NCSA Technology Conference in Kearney, Nebraska both Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. I love his message. I agree with his approach. My goal in this entry is to share with you, a few of the points he made...or that I recall as I type.

So, I'll start with a link to his blog and the material he covered. What I respect about Scott is that he shares all that he does. He posts it and encourages the use of his material under a Creative Commons license. You see, that is part of his message...and that message is to use the internet, share your stuff, it's all about sharing, teaching, learning and using all of the technology that we now have in front of us...to make education better. To make the teaching and learning process...better. To make administrators better.

In his blog post, for Nebraska, he has both keynote address slides available. But wait, there's more! He lists his resources, recommended reading, as well as recommended viewing. Whether admin attended this conference or not, they should spend time on this page alone. Looking at the resources, watching the videos, having discussions about what it is that is on this site.

OK, back to what I said I was going to do...try and summarize what he'd covered or at least highlight some of it for you.

I'll start with one of his questions he asked the group to discuss at their tables: As students and educators integrate technology more into what they do, what are the fears, concerns, and issues? Things like; lawsuits, filters, safety, cyberbullying, etc. came up, among others.

Next, he put some numbers to the actual threat of online predators. In short, the odds of this happening are less than 1%. In other words, we are filtering, blocking, disallowing the use of the internet and social networks because of this small...very small chance that this might happen.

Next, something I hear often. Well, what about CIPA? The Children's Internet Protection Act. He broke down what it actually says and what the law actually requires. Basically, if you get E-rate dollars, you must have an Internet safety policy that includes protection measures. The measures must block or tilter "pictures" (obscene, child pornography, harmful to minors). Schools must adopt and enforce a policy to monitor online activities. Much of this came back to, or comes back to "teacher supervision". In other words, YouTube could be opened. But teachers and admin must talk about appropriate use and actually monitor and supervise those students in their care. So, he asked, "Is it a technology issues or a supervision issue?" Not a bad question.

He then turned to disciplinary issues and asked if they (the admin, the schools) were treating technology issues different than other disciplinary issues? He did make the point that many or most schools already have policies in place that include bullying, harassment, etc. etc. These policies could easily be amended slightly to include the appropriate use of technology, access to social networks, etc. In other words, rather than making complete, separate, new policies...just use what you ALREADY have and add a tech piece to it.

He also asked for each school to look at their AUP "Acceptable Use Policy". Does it focus on punishment or opportunity? Could this be a great opportunity to involve parents in a discussion about 21st century learning?

Later, a couple questions that hit a home run: Who is responsible for teaching appropriate use? Can you teach appropriate and empowering use if you're categorically blocking everything?

Here's what I suggest. Take some time on his blog, click on this link. Check out his message. Have some discussions with others who were there. Who heard his message. It makes a lot of sense.

Don't live in fear (regarding the internet and technology). Begin to educate yourself and allow those around you to use all of the great things technology has to offer. Don't block it all, disallow the use of cell phones, make teachers ASK to have a site opened. Focus on supervision of students and teach appropriate use.

Don't make kids "power down" at school. Use technology to engage students. Use technology to become more efficient and effective.

I hope I have, in some small way, shared a bit of his message. I encourage your thoughts. Please comment if you wish.

Administrator Tech Conference

I'm attending the 2nd Annual Administrator Tech Conference in Kearney, Nebraska. The Nebraska Council of School Administrators is putting on this event. This year it was decided that a "pre-conference" would be held and the title is "Working in the Digital World." Because of room space, it was limited to only 50 participants...and there's a waiting list of 45. They could easily fill another section. So my thoughts turn to the need for this type of training, for administrators. Only 50 slots and 95 signed up! I'd say a definite YES training needs to happen for admin. They are here by choice. They want to know about "The Digital World". No matter what state your in, how large your school district is...whether you're in small town Nebraska or New York City, admin need training. We need to get them excited and engaged with the digital world and in the digital life! The keynote tonight and tomorrow is Scott McLeod. Scott is an expert in the area of technology, administration and living the digital life! I am very excited about these couple of days and look forward to learning!

Firing the Flip Video (it had to be done)

Well, I guess it had to happen. I had to fire my Flip Video camera today. I didn't want to do it, but the new iPod Touch can do so much more than just shoot video.

I know that my Flip and my Kodak Zi8 are friends...so I'm sure the news will get out. I should have probably brought them both in at the same time. Oh well...it's too late now.

This footage of the actual event was obtained as it transpired. Security eventually had to be called as Flip was...well... "flipping out" after the news had a chance to sink in. It was not pretty.

Note: This is the same video, posted twice - 1 on TeacherTube, the other on YouTube. They are the same video. I put it on TeacherTube as well because YouTube is blocked in many schools.

Dual Cameras

This new iPod Touch has a 1-click button that allow for the user to quickly change from one camera to the next. So often I see people holding a camera out and pressing the button hoping to get themselves in the shot. Well, now it's easy to do because you have the ability to see what you are shooting! Genius.

My First 10 Minutes

After getting my hands on that new iPod Touch...here's what I did those first few moments (other than taking it out of the box).

I did try the camera. I found it funny that for some reason, I only thought it would shoot video. But it does also take still pictures. Here's a couple I took. I'm holding one iPod and taking the picture with it with the other iPod in my other hand. So these pictures are actually taken with the iPod.

In picture one...I'm holding the iPod, which I consider normal, and it takes (skinny or portrait pics). For some reason I want to hold it that way. But, as you see in pic 2, it also works in landscape mode.

OK. Now for video. Again, I first shot the video holding the iPod in portrait mode...or, I think, how one might naturally hold it. I immediately shared the video to YouTube. I wanted to see how quick, smooth and easy it was. I'm here to tell you...it was very easy. I'm amazed at how, well, EASY it was. I shot the video, didn't edit any of it, clicked "Send to YouTube"...and off it went!

Do you see how it looks "skinny" on the screen (above)? It's because I was holding it up and down. In the next video (below), I simply turned it sideways. It looks much better, don't you think?

I'll continue to experiment with this new, incredible device...and post them here on my blog.

Christmas...in September!

Originally upon ordering the new iPod Touch, I received an estimated time of shipping as September 24th. Well, after checking the tracking online this morning, I will have it in my hands this afternoon. That's earlier than expected and I'm glad to have received this news.

What I'll do with it first: Well, open it of course. Duh? I mean, after that! I plan on immediately trying out the video camera, then Facetime. You know that Facetime will only talk with other devices using Facetime. In other words, unless you have an iPhone or an friend with an iPhone OR a friend with a new iPod Touch...Facetime won't do much. So, I ordered 2 iPod Touches. I will probably have Facetime with myself, unless I can talk someone into using the other iPod Touch!? I'm thinking it may not be a problem handing the other one off...and letting them use it as well.

OK...back to what I was saying. I will want to try the camera and the ability to edit right on the iPod. Apple has blessed the iPod Touch with the ability to edit using, I'm sure, a little watered down version of iMovie. The iMovie app does cost $4.99 but having not even seen it, I'm pretty sure it's worth it. Last, but not least, I'm curious how easy it is to share the video. After reading, it appears to either go to MobileMe gallery, email, or on YouTube. Again, I'll keep you posted.

Is it wrong...that as I'm typing this, I'm wondering if the UPS guy is here yet. They said he comes after lunch...and it is 12:58 Central time. Shouldn't he be here?

I'm going to check.

Sharing...is GOOD! Technology Makes it Easy.

-If I only had time to talk with other teachers.
-Sharing is important...I just don't have time.

Have you heard any of these statements or some other version similar to this? I have. Well, let me tell you, that's what technology and more specifically, Social Networks, are for...SHARING.

I am a former elementary teacher, former elementary principal. I get it. Teachers are busy. It's very easy to say, "I don't have time to go out and try to find a website" or "Wow! I didn't know that website even existed..." or "...geesh, I feel so left out of the loop. How was I supposed to know how to do that?" OR "I don't have time to sit at the computer and just look around to see what's out there."

Technology makes it very easy to share information. More specifically, internet. Even more specifically, social networking. Oh...I said it. The taboo word in the educational setting. Social Networking! There it was again! It's kind of like saying "Voldemort" in the Harry Potter books and movies. Don't say that! Voldemort! Social Networking!

Twitter, Delicious, Diigo, Facebook, Ning...and others are fantastic ways to share what you know, what you found and what you'd like to know or need help with.

Twitter is a way to share, 140 characters at a time. Depending on who you follow and who follows you, will depend on your success in this platform. Watch this.

Delicious is a "Social Bookmarking" site. Here's how it works. Find a great website > share it to Delicious. By doing this, you've now allowed for others who are using Delicious, to make you part of their "Network" and therefore, can see what you've found! Watch this video about "Social Bookmarking" to gain some perspective.

Diigo is similar to Delicious. I don't use it, but know many that do...and LOVE it!

Facebook is mostly used by people who want to reconnect with their friends, relatives, etc. However, it does have some sharing capabilities other than just what you did last weekend or the picture of you at the fair. If you, the user, decides to post an educational link then all of your friends would be able to see it as well. I know some educators have separate Facebook pages. One is for themselves...and their personal life (yes, it's true, teachers have personal lives). The other page is for their classroom or school. If you choose to have a classroom or school page, then people that "Like" your page, will see what great websites you've shared!

Ning is a website that allow you to create your OWN social network. It's all online...and used to be free, now it's a paid subscription. If you and your fellow teachers want to password protect your stuff and share it among one another, this might be worth looking at.

So get out there (on the internet)...and SHARE, SHARE, SHARE! Don't find that great website, use it in your classroom and huddle over it like you've just found a pot of gold and you don't want anybody to take it. Share it!

New iPod Touch = WOW!

Last week Apple announced their new line of iPods. The most interesting of the new line of iPods, in my opinion, is the new iPod Touch.

You see, the new iPod Touch has two (yes two) cameras...and it records in HD. So, in other words you have, in this little device, your music, photos, internet, email, games...and now, the ability to record high-definition video! [Pause for dramatic effect] But wait, there's more. The new iPod Touch has a feature called "FaceTime". When the iPod user is in a wireless environment, it is now possible to video chat through the use of this device. [Pause for more dramatic effect]

FaceTime does seem awesome doesn't it? I can carry this little device around in my pocket and be able to video chat with others. Amazing. As usual, there's always a catch. Currently the "FaceTime" feature will only work if you have a friend with a new iPod Touch or iPhone. In other words, the ability doesn't exist for myself to call my friend, from my iPod Touch, and video chat via Skype or whatever service you'd like to insert.

Back to the the two cameras and the ability to film in HD. Imagine a classroom...imagine students with this device and easily being able to record something for their class, for an assignment, for a project or their school or class website. Then being able to edit the movie right on the iPod Touch. It seems to good to be true. The educational value of this little device has just increased. We already have the App Store and iBooks...now we can shoot video and edit it. (Did I mention I think this is incredible?)

I am continually amazed and excited at how easy it's becoming to be creative, to shoot video and share it with others. It's a joy to be around to experience all of this technology. I think of my parents who experienced their first television as children...and think to where we are now. I can't help but wonder what we'll have in another 5 years...or 10 years? What will our current kindergarten students have when they are 40-something years old?

What about those of us who carry around a Flip video camera? Another popular little video camera I see is the Kodak Zi8. Both of these camera can shoot in HD...but no internet, no music, no Apps. Do you see where I'm headed with this? Why would I need to buy another Flip or Zi8? Why? You see, one week ago I might have carried my Flip or my Zi8 AND my iPod Touch. Now, instead of two devices, I can carry one. It seems like a no brainer to me. I will want to carry only one device.

What's with the Wiki?

Have you ever used a wiki? Are you asking yourself, "What's a wiki?" If so, watch this video.

Now that you have an idea what a wiki is, let me tell you how I've used it in the past as well as how I've seen my peers use it AND how a wiki is being used at the start of this new school year at my workplace.

The Past:

Over the last couple of years, I've used a wiki in various presentations and workshops. Mainly to have the agenda online, with links, images, etc. etc. This was done instead of having a "paper agenda." Upon arrival at the workshop, participants would be referred to the wiki and we'd talk briefly about it and even add to it as the day progressed. I would, however, say that if something was added, it was added by myself or my co-presenter. Ideally it would have been added to by the participants in the session, which to me, is how a wiki should really work. I have also used it in presentations at conferences.

My Peers:

I must say, I've seen some pretty incredible, in-depth, wikis created by my peers. I can tell that there was some effort to put them together. For instance, look at this 21st Century Skills Fair wiki. This fantastic group of educators use a site called Wikispaces to create their wikis. I have also stumbled upon some other wikis, through Twitter or in some other fashion. For instance: Elementary Voicethreads, or "How to make a Voicethread", or "Web 2.0 and Marzano"...there are soooooo many I don't know about...but I save them as I see them!

New (at my workplace):

This year, at work, we've had new committees, with new people, in new roles...and all of us have different calendars (shocking, I know). So, with all of these new roles, we decided that we needed to meet as a group to make sure that we all know "what's going on" in respect to our new roles and positions. (Insert light bulb here) The idea is(was) to start a wiki.

The purpose of the wiki, for myself, was to try and cut down on email. One email sent out to everyone on the committee, then that person clicking the "reply-to-all" button, then another person "replying-to-all" and so on, etc., etc. Have you been there and done that? The email piles up, it takes FOREVER to read, decipher whether or not you need that information, do you file the info? Trash it? ...I digress.

What if...just what if, we all have access to a wiki, where we all post any information we want or need to share, this info could be Word documents, pdfs, spreadsheets, links or just typed info. (Poof)...all of the emailing back and forth just disappeared. Then, when the person(s) in the group have info to share with the rest of the group, they simply post it to the wiki. (Are you with me?) The next thought is, then I, a member of the group, decide I want to know what's happening, I then look at the wiki! Amazing! Simple! Friendly!

Comments on a Blog...Powerful

I have just started blogging this fall, as part of a personal and professional goal. It has been a lot of fun just getting started. I've heard speakers discuss as well as read about how comments on blogs extend the discussion (for students and teachers). I believed it...and now I see it.

I have only posted a mere 8 or 9 entries so far and I must say, I really enjoy the comments posted by those who have read it. I can see how an entry isn't always just written, posted...and that's it. Actually it's much different. I have written, reread, posted, added to, changed wording, taken a reply or two, read others thoughts on the subject, reposted, etc.

I'm thinking about not only my personal learning about the process, but also very much thinking of the student in the classroom. If they were to blog and were able to get responses. How empowering that might make them feel. How different that might be than the usual "write a paper, turn it in, wait for only the teacher's thoughts" process that goes on in so many schools. I love how, in blogging, the discussion can go on and on. I've heard speakers (as I'd stated earlier) who talk about how the learning goes on and on well after the "assignment" is over. (I think it was Alan November talking about this...)

Well, I should probably apologize to those millions of blogs out there in cyberland...that I haven't responded to. I can say, I need a few blogs to read and to post comments on, so others can experience the same excited feeling.

Free Calls with Gmail

Yesterday I saw (on Twitter mostly) people posting that Gmail now allows for free calling. I didn't think much about it, other than to think, "Cool" and I went about my day. But today I decided to give it a try. So, I called my office...crazy, I know. I could have called some faraway place, but I made a call from my office, to my office (way to think globally, think big). Anyway, I made the call. It worked flawlessly.

How did I do it? Well, to make the call I had nothing to set up because I already had a gmail account, microphone, speakers (which were built in on my Mac). How was the audio? The call was very clear. Any tricks to dialing? Just dial like you would any phone.

So, feeling a bit enthusiastic, I tried calling Texas, well not "Texas" but my brother who lives in Texas. Same result, it worked effortlessly and I didn't have a single issue. Now I'm thinking, "Why would I use any of my 'peak minutes' on my cell phone or take one of the lines at work?" Then I laughed my evil laugh at my cell phone service. I taunted them feverishly...but it didn't matter, they didn't know I was doing it. Maybe I should call them (my cell service provider) from my Gmail. During peak hours...YES, that would show them! But I digress...

I continued. My next call, my son's elementary school. I had to pick him up for an eye doctor appointment. I called the school, kindly reminded them I would be picking him up and that he shouldn't go out for recess (poor kid)...and I hung up. They had no idea (on the other end) that I was calling from my computer via Gmail.

Calling has never been so fun. Well, I may be overreacting a bit. But it is kind of cool. So...how long until it's not "FREE?" We shall see.

21st Century Skills Fair - Omaha, NE

This September, ESU 3 (Omaha, NE) will be hosting a 21st Century Skills Fair. This year's keynote speaker is Tony Vincent, a former Nebraska educator.

Information about Tony Vincent: Tony Vincent started teaching fifth grade in Omaha, Nebraska twelve years ago when it wasn't so easy to publish online. Tony left regular teaching at Willowdale to become an independent consultant in 2006. Currently based in Phoenix, Arizona, Tony has worked with teachers and students from around the world. Tony co-wrote Handhelds for Teachers & Administrators, a book about handheld computers, iPods, and podcasting. WolframAlpha and Goofram

Earlier this summer, I was at a sharing session at the ISTE conference in Denver. This "Web 2.0 Smackdown" gave people in the audience to share whatever they wanted (tech related) in two minutes or less. These two websites caught my eye: WolframAlpha and Goofram.

WolframAlpha - One of the main purposes is that it can solve math problems for you...or better yet, as one educator put it, “...rather than framing it as solving at WolframAlpha, maybe frame it as preparing for analysis?” I like that description a little better.

Seriously, try it out. Try a simple problem like $450 + 15% or a more difficult problem...for instance, something like, x^2 sin(x)...(I’m not sure really what that means).

Next look at the top of the page, click on “Examples” and chose your focus.

But that’s not all it does, it also can give you information about a specific date. Try typing your birthday in the search. Try a couple of cities. Type in a couple of stocks (like IBM and APPLE). Other fun things to try...type in your first name and another first name. You’ll get a comparison of both names.

For whatever it’s worth, try out WolframAlpha and see what you can discover.

Next, Goofram. This search engine actually incorporates Google, but also includes the WorlframAlpha results on the same page. The page is split into two sections, half with the Google results, half with the WolframAlpha results.

1:1 Schools (and if I were teaching)

I get in to many schools, both with and without 1:1 programs. When I am in a school that has access to all of that great technology, I can't help but think that if I were still teaching I would definitely want to be in a 1:1 situation. So what I'm saying is, if I ever found myself back into the classroom full time, I would search out those districts that have embraced technology. It's the world we live in. It's the world our students have been born into.

I realize there's more to teaching than just having a 1:1 program and "life is good." I get that. What I'm saying is that my students (and myself) could be and would be more creative and engaged if we had access to technology. I also understand that just having a 1:1 program doesn't make a teacher or student suddenly "creative." However through the use of technology, I think there are many more opportunities to show what has been learned. Technology engages many of our students. If students are "engaged" then discipline decreases, students are happier and will most likely learn more...and therefore post better scores. Do you know what I mean?

I think that a district that thinks about "technology" and the world that we live in, would be missing something if they weren't cheerleading their teachers to use and incorporate it into their lives.

Our students certainly use it...all of the time. As I get around to conferences and listen to various speakers, I often hear how students have to "power down" when they come to school. They continue to discuss how the school setting looks and feels like the early 1900's when the teacher stood at the front of the room and regurgitated what they know and the students then "know it too." However these days, when school is out, the students leave and "power up." Students use social networks, collaborate, communicate and are on the phones (texting mostly), etc. etc. They do this not only with the people in their community, they do this across the U.S. and the world.

An Alan November quote I heard...really hit home with me. Alan said, "Teachers' knowledge should not be the limit of what kids learn." So...to stand in front of the students all day, every day and share all of my own knowledge, isn't the ONLY way that students should learn. There's so much to learn, via the internet, social networking, etc. If the school board doesn't "get it" and the administration and teachers don't "get it," then we might be stuck in the early 1900's for a while.

So to those that "get it" way to go! To those that don't, well...get going!

In case you missed it...a couple of things are going away. The two items I'm talking about are Google Wave and the Apple Learning Interchange. If you haven't ever used these, well...there you have it! In Apple's case, the ALI is just moving more towards the more popular iTunes U. For Google, I'm not overly worried about them. Are you? They'll be fine - I'm thinking.

I remember when Google Wave came out...don't you? I so desperately wanted an "invite" to be part of Google Wave and was envious of those who posted/shared that they had been invited. I sort of felt like Charlie Brown not getting a Valentine's Day card. So, when I received an invite, it was like hitting the lottery! Oh the excitement, the anticipation...and then........yawn. I think, one day, a few of us used it and, well, no wonder it's going away.

As far as Apple ALI, I did go to a few times, but never really got "into" it. I do however spend time in iTunes U. So Apple did the right thing by forcing their traffic to go to iTunes U. If you haven't been to iTunes U...I strongly suggest it. What a great place to learn and explore. Actually, I have grand intentions of adding to it. Speaking of that, I think I'll do that today!

I love to use Sir Ken Robinson quotes. Specifically from his book, "The Element." My latest, favorite quote is: "...when you are inspired, your work can be inspirational to others." I drew a quick pic and made it my desktop.

I plan to use more of Sir Ken's "stuff," as it is very meaningful in whatever career that you've chosen.

Revisiting Blogging

I am going to try, once again, to blog. I'd really gotten into Twitter and the 140 characters that they allow. It seemed easier and a little more "doable." However, I can also see that there were many times that I needed to say a little more...which is where a blog would have been better. So, in the theme of a New Year's Resolution (only a new school year's resolution). I will blog more this year.
